The Challenge

Physical art exhibitions, no matter how impactful, are inherently limited by geography, time, and physical capacity. Ubuhle Ngaphaya Kwameva, a profound solo exhibition by South African artist, researcher, and archivist Siviwe James, was originally hosted at the vibrant Victoria Yards in Johannesburg. To truly honour the depth of her research and art, and to share her vital perspectives with the world, the exhibition needed to transcend its physical walls and reach a much wider, unrestricted audience.

The Solution

Supermalome was tasked with reimagining and digitising the physical exhibition into a fully immersive virtual showcase.

Using PlayCanvas, we built a highly optimised, interactive 3D environment that faithfully translates the spatial flow, lighting, and emotional resonance of the original Victoria Yards gallery into the digital realm. We then published the experience on Viverse, a leading global VR and metaverse platform. This allows users from anywhere in the world to step into the virtual gallery, explore the intricate details of the artworks, and engage with the artist’s archival research in a cutting-edge spatial environment.

The Impact

This project successfully transformed a localized physical event into a permanent, global digital experience.
  • Democratizing Access to Art: We removed the geographical and physical barriers of the traditional gallery, allowing students, researchers, and art lovers from across South Africa and the globe to experience the exhibition freely.
  • Digital Archiving of Contemporary History: By creating a virtual twin of the exhibition on a robust platform like Viverse, we have helped preserve a significant moment in South African contemporary art, ensuring it lives on long after the physical show has ended.
  • Amplifying Local Voices: We provided a high-tech digital platform to elevate the work of a vital South African archivist and researcher, directly contributing to our mission of uplifting our nation’s creative and intellectual voices.
