The Challenge

In South Africa, a stark educational divide exists: approximately 80% of public schools lack physical science laboratories. Because of this, thousands of students are forced to learn complex, abstract scientific practicals purely by reading textbooks. This lack of hands-on experience creates a massive barrier to understanding STEM subjects and limits future opportunities for the country’s youth. We needed to find a way to make these invisible, abstract concepts visible and tangible.

The Solution

Supermalome designed and developed the Sisanda App Universe (SAU), an immersive virtual science lab that utilizes 3D modelling and Augmented Reality (AR) to simulate real-world science experiments.

With the proud support and funding of the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), we didn’t just build the software; we executed a comprehensive on-the-ground rollout. We deployed the pilot across 11 schools in KwaZulu-Natal (Empangeni and Mpumalanga) and Gauteng (Katlehong and Reiger Park). To ensure frictionless access for the students, we sourced, configured, and distributed 230 tablets pre-loaded with the SAU application directly to the classrooms.

The Impact

SAU successfully bridged the digital and educational divide, transforming how students interact with science.
  • Democratized Education: We provided hundreds of students with hands-on, interactive science practicals that their schools could not physically afford.
  • Proven Scalability: The solution proved so effective and adaptable that it was successfully deployed and utilised in neighboring countries, including Botswana and Zimbabwe.
  • Tangible Results: By distributing 230 devices and training educators across 11 schools, we proved that immersive technology can be successfully integrated into public sector education to uplift our nation’s future workforce.
