Reflection on the first quarter

The first quarter of 2026 ended on a high note for us. We launched new projects, expanded our team, and earned some industry recognition. These wins show how far we have come in building a sustainable small business. As we celebrate this milestone, this is a strong, yet humble reminder of how important it is to pause and appreciate our progress, even when things get busy. We tend to get lost in those busy moments, between deadlines and endless back-to-back meetings.

Pivoting from Sisanda Tech

In December of 2025, I decided to move on from Sisanda Tech, which was an edtech startup focused on using augmented and virtual reality to improve science education in South Africa. Sisanda Tech started in 2025, and in the short period in which Sisanda Tech was operational, we provided more than 150 tablets to at least 10 schools. While the work was promising and helped improve education, we could not make it commercially successful after several years of trying. Making the decision to pivot wasn’t easy, but as Eric Ries said, “When you hit upon something that is not working, you have two basic choices: Change direction or keep going.” I chose to change direction, which led to Supermalome.

New Horizons with Supermalome

After all the joyful festivities of December 2025, I decided to officially launch Supermalome, a studio that exists to tell South African stories through immersive games. This is more of coming back home, as before we started working on the education simulation, I was developing the games. Lol, here is our first game, a bit embarrassing:

So, building the games takes us back to that moment. I have always wanted to make games or an interactive experience that can reflect the experience of my childhood in the township. Within the first month of running Supermalome, I was joined by four marketing students for an internship programme. We were joined by Usenathi, Jessica, Mathoto, and Katlego, and they found Mandisa Maphumulo, who was already with us, completing her internship. Within the space of two months, they have grown so much and started contributing to building our brand on social media. We have experienced growth in followers, engagement, and recognition of our work. The office has been so full of energy, fights, and debate that ensure our story and vision get shared. I’m looking forward to what they’re going to do in the next three months, as they have just started to have fun.

Part of Google Hustle Academy

We were accepted into the Google Digital Growth Initiative Training programme powered by Upskill Universe, where we were taught how to use Google products to promote our games. As part of this program, we were awarded the credits to use on Google Ads to run campaigns, and this has brought the impact on our games to be able to get more players. We have launched two games, Morabaraba 3D and Fingerboard 3D collectively; they have surpassed 1200 downloads altogether, but we are optimistic we will grow from here.

CIPC IP Youth Awards

We were nominated for the CIPC Intellectual Property Youth Awards under the category of Creative IP Excellence for the work we do. We were awarded third in the category, and for us, this was more of a validation for the work we do, our story, our ideas, and our intellectual property. This was the most exciting way to conclude the third quarter of 2026. Leaders, thank you so much for the support.

A few words from the interns

“So, what I have learnt so far is that work is much better when you have a team around rather than doing it individually. Yes, it is pivotal to learn to do tasks on your own, but again, no one is an island. When working as a team, you get to learn how other individuals think and approach problems and solve them, and you get to think outside the box, which gives you confidence as an individual. What I have also learnt is brand consistency, practically as a marketer, and the insights, as well as how to grow a brand. I have learnt how to navigate around Google tools and how to be creative with Canva, as well as how to act in a professional setting. While working at SuperMalome, I have received insights on what an article needs to be perfect, and what a writer of an article needs to be perfect. Lastly and most importantly, I have learnt how to do research thoroughly.’’ -Katleho

“My experience at SuperMalome has been a great one. We immediately hit the ground running with workshops and meetings. I have learnt so much about the industry and myself in the past 3 months. I thought Canva was just meant to generate a fancy-looking resume, but my mentor taught me that there is more to it than that. I have learnt so much about marketing that I never thought of. Making content is not just setting up a camera, taking one shot, and posting it for your viewers. There is more to marketing than what most people think.  As for my teammates, they have really helped make the past 3 months a breeze with laughter and by helping with my workload when I needed it. They are people I can depend on. Our teamwork dynamic has certainly made what felt like a hard day feel like light work. I have learnt the importance of research, thoroughly understanding your audience before distribution of content, and sometimes stepping back to celebrate the small wins. You cannot constantly be looking for the next task before taking a moment to be proud of your hard work. I have definitely enjoyed the last 3 months at SuperMalome with the little squabbles here and there, but they are worth it at the end of the day.’’ – Usenathi

‘’Working at SuperMalome over the past three months has been such a learning experience. From attending workshops to getting more insight into the Google side of things, I have really been exposed to a lot. I have also learned more about myself and what I’m capable of. Every task feels like a chance to grow, and I am slowly getting the hang of turning what I’ve learned in theory into actual practice. I have even taken on things I never thought I could do, like editing and writing articles. One thing that really stood out for me is how far consistency and hard work can take you in marketing. Sometimes it feels like the work is not getting you anywhere, but when you look at the results and the numbers, it all starts to make sense. I have also learned to take disagreements and misunderstandings as part of the process. Not everything will always go smoothly, but that is where the growth happens. Constructive criticism has honestly helped me improve a lot.’’- Jessica

‘’I started off on a shaky slate, asking myself if I would ever be able to do the work. Things took off when I met the team; everyone is super chill, and teamwork is on vibes! And honestly, shout out to my team. We’ve been diving into projects like writing articles and learning how to use more tools. I believe that was my favorite part as it worked to my advantage. Learning how to familiarize myself with how others perceive and approach things has been good in building a good relationship with the team. Being a marketer requires learning, adapting, and being consistent to reach the objectives/ goals of the company, and that has been the focus since the beginning of the business. Overall, it has been a good experience working at Supermalome, looking forward to more growth, learning, and experiences.’’-Mathoto

‘’Working with Supermalome, I have learnt to use PlayCanvas while gaining experience in connecting Viverse to PlayCanvas. I used 8th Wall, where we focused on image tracking and used WordPress to create websites. I also learnt how to use Canva and to communicate with my teammates and ask for help when needed. Challenges I faced when using PlayCanvas included adding colliders to the 3D model, which was difficult sometimes, and adding first-person movement to the project. On WordPress, I couldn’t change the footer background color. When adding the logo to our website, it became white, not what I wanted. I like working with Supermalome because we can ask for help when we are stuck with the task given to us, and when we are done with our task, Baso tells us that we did great, and that encourages us to work hard and get the job done.’’ -Mandisa

We are looking forward to making more things happen.
