How to play Morabaraba
Morabaraba (or Mlabalaba) is a traditional two-player strategy board game popular in Southern Africa. Players, known as “herders,” compete with 12 pieces (“cows”) each. The objective is to form rows of three (“mills”) to capture the opponent’s pieces. You win by either trapping your opponent so they cannot move or reducing them to only two cows.
Morabaraba has been played for centuries, likely dating back to at least the 16th or 17th century. While similar to European “mill” games, Morabaraba developed independently within Southern African herding communities. Today, it is a competitive sport recognized by the Morabaraba Association of South Africa.
Ashe Lekae? So le nyaka hong mpotsa hore alitsi game ya Morabaraba? Ka nako ya nou? Yoh, lebo di great grandparents ba itsi, mara e le TikTok yona, number 1. Let’s go through it step-by-step so you can show your people hore bashimane le banyana isn’t the only thing you know. You already don’t know 30 Seconds, so at least learn Morabaraba. Ha e require knowledge ya rocket science, neh kadlala. Sharp? A reyeng.
Basic Steps (It’s not hard, relax)
1.Placing Phase — “Put your cows down, boss”
Players take turns placing their cows on empty points. Think of it like reserving seats at the groove—if you snooze, you lose. Your mission is to line up three cows. That’s when you say: “Eish, ke game changer!”
2. Moving Phase — “Strategy, not just vibes”
Once all cows are on the board, you move them along the connected lines. No jumping like you’re late for a taxi—follow the lines! This is where you show your IQ, not just your confidence.
3.Flying Phase — “Last-born privilege”
When you are down to your last three cows, you can “fly” to ANY open spot on the board. Yes, anywhere. VIP access. No queue. It’s basically: “Don’t count me out yet, mfethu.”
Unique Rules (Read carefully before you embarrass yourself)
- 12 Cows Each: Not 9. Twelve. A full squad. More cows mean more chances to block your opponent and flex your brainpower. If you still lose… hayi, we need to talk.
- The Board Has Extra Diagonals: Unlike other versions, Morabaraba has diagonal lines. More paths mean more chaos and more strategy. It’s like Joburg traffic, many routes, same stress.
- Making a Mill: Three cows in a straight line = a MILL. When you form one, you remove one of your opponent’s cows. Translation: “Thanks for coming, but you can go home now.”
- Don’t Touch the Mill: You cannot remove a cow that is currently part of a mill unless ALL of your opponent’s cows are already in mills. Stay humble; don’t celebrate too early.
- No “Copy-Paste”: You cannot move a cow out of a mill and then immediately back into the same spot to claim another cow on the very next turn. This is Morabaraba, not “copy-paste.”
• Flying Rule: Down to three cows? You can jump anywhere. It’s comeback season. Believe in yourself!
Step-by-Step Guide to Winning
Step | Action | The Goal |
Step 1 | Set Up | Sit opposite your opponent and face your destiny. Choose your colours and grab your 12 cows. |
Step 2 | Placing | Take turns placing cows on empty spots. Form a mill to kick an opponent’s cow off the board. |
Step 3 | Moving | Once all cows are placed, slide them along the lines. Block your opponent and break their mills. |
Step 4 | Flying | If you have only 3 cows left, start flying. Use that mobility to create one last mill. |
Step 5 | Winning | You win if the opponent has only 2 cows left or is completely blocked. |
At the end of the game, you may respectfully say:
“Sharp-sharp, good game. Practice makes perfect, my guy.”
