Grace Ntombi Gallery

Projecting ancient Basotho Litema heritage into the global metaverse through immersive 3D web technology.

Industry: Arts, Culture, Heritage & Web3

Tech Stack: PlayCanvas, Viverse (VR/Metaverse Platform), 3D Asset Integration

The Challenge

Litema is a profound and ancient Basotho art style, practised exclusively by Basotho women as early as the 1600s. More than just decoration, it is a sacred form of religious art used to praise God and the ancestors, and a complex visual language used for communication. However, physical art is bound by geography. To preserve this vital piece of Southern African heritage and share its deep spiritual significance with the world, it needed to transcend physical walls and reach a global, digital audience.

The Solution

Supermalome designed and developed a fully immersive, 3D virtual art gallery to showcase Grace Ntombi’s Litema masterpieces.

Using PlayCanvas, we built a highly optimised, interactive 3D environment that faithfully recreates the spatial experience of walking through a curated gallery. We then published the experience on Viverse, a leading global VR and metaverse platform. This allows users from anywhere in the world to don a VR headset or use their web browsers to “step inside” the gallery, experience the intricate patterns of the Litema art in a 3D space, and learn about the sacred history of the Basotho women who created it.

The Impact

This project successfully bridges the gap between ancient African tradition and the future of the spatial web.
  • Global Cultural Accessibility: We took a localised, deeply traditional art form and made it accessible on a global metaverse platform, allowing international audiences to experience and appreciate Basotho heritage.
  • Digital Archiving of Sacred Art: By digitising the Litema artworks, we are helping to preserve the spiritual expressions, religious history, and communicative language of Basotho women, ensuring it is not lost to time.
  • Modernising Heritage: We proved that traditional African art can seamlessly integrate with cutting-edge Web3 and spatial computing technologies, creating a new, modern medium for cultural storytelling.
