The Challenge

Climate change is a complex, overwhelming issue, and for young learners, its impacts can feel abstract and distant. Traditional classroom methods often struggle to convey the urgency of environmental degradation or inspire tangible action. To achieve UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action), we needed to move beyond passive learning and create an innovative, engaging format that would make the realities of the climate crisis visible, relatable, and actionable for the youth of South Africa.

The Solution

Supermalome partnered with the UNDP, UNICEF South Africa, and the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre to design and develop a groundbreaking Virtual Reality experience. Instead of just reading about environmental challenges, learners put on a VR headset and step directly into an interactive, gamified digital forest.

Within this virtual world, they engage in direct, interactive experiences that teach them how to protect forest life, keep water sources safe, understand the real-world impact of fossil fuels, and explore the importance of sustainable food systems. The experience combines multimedia content, interactive quizzes, and conversational elements to guide the learner on a personal journey of sustainability.

The Impact

Launched at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg, the experience has successfully transformed environmental education from a textbook lesson into an unforgettable, empathetic journey.
  • Advancing SDG 13: We successfully harnessed technology and youth engagement to directly contribute to global climate action goals, as recognized by UNDP and UNICEF leadership.
  • Reaching Vulnerable Communities: The pilot actively engaged learners from communities like Diepkloof in Soweto, ensuring that cutting-edge, immersive educational technology is accessible to those who need it most.
  • From Awareness to Action: As noted by UNDP leadership, the experience was specifically designed to not only increase awareness of the driving causes of climate change but to provide youth with concrete actions they can take to mitigate its impact.
